It has been said that, at its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future. The past is not the property of historians; it is a public possession. It belongs to anyone who is aware of it, and it grows by being shared. The great potential contribution of preservation to American life is not in the saving of structures per se, but in the transformation of the values by which we live.
One of the most interesting things about the town of Goldfield, Nevada is that the dead now far outnumber the living. There are approximately 1,200 people buried in the city cemetery and according to the 2010 census, only 248 people currently reside in Goldfield. Most of the tombstones are made from crudely cut stone, and volunteers over the years have kept the inscriptions visible by painting them red. A lot of the stones are simply marked miner, or unknown.
